~Bus stop, wet day, he's there, I say
~Please share my umbrella
~Bus stop, bus goes, he stays, love grows
~Under my umbrella
It was only the first day at his new school but Daisuke was already
tired of it. Sitting in the center row, center column, he balanced
his pencil with its chewed up eraser upon his upper lip holding it in
place with his nose. His eyes closed as he sighed and rested his chin
in his palm.
"Ando Daisuke," the old man at the front of the room called out,
keeping his eyes on his notebook in hand. Moments passed without
answer so he called again, "Ando Daisuke!" this time looking around
the room.
Daisuke felt something jab him in the back and the pencil dropped
from it's equilibrium state to his desk. "What?" He stopped short of
turning around when he realized the full of the class staring at him.
The teacher looked at him through his large glasses. "Ando
Daisuke, I presume?"
Slightly confused, Daisuke realized that he had been taking role
and stood up. "Ando Daisuke reporting for duty, sir!" he exclaimed,
saluting the teacher with a large grin plastered to his face before
sitting. The smile stayed on his face as the class laughed. All but
one.
"Niikura Kaoru?"
Die heard the slide of a chair from behind him but he did not turn,
rather he continued the doodle of a small guitar upon his papers. But
his hand stopped suddenly as a soothingly deep voice filled his ears,
making his eyes wide and ears perk.
"Here."
One small word but within it a collection of emotion and poetry
wishing to escape.
Daisuke would know this boy, weather he liked it or not.
"Niikura Kaoru."
Kaoru turned at the sound of his name. "Ando Daisuke," he replied
at the sight of a head of bright red flames.
"Die."
An eyebrow rose upon Kaoru's face then slowly lowered at the smile
that formed on the other mans lips and the slightly pleading looking
eyes at his reaction. "Die."
Die's smile grew and his face became pleased. "You have a nickname?"
"No. Just Kaoru." Kaoru turned back to the his locker, reaching in
to put away his days books. "Why do you ask?" he turned back to Die,
closing his locker in the process and throwing his book bag over his
shoulder.
Die shrugged. "Just wondering."
Kaoru gave a confused look then continued his walk down the hall to
the front door of the building.
"Yo, wait up!" Die chased after him catching up in a matter of
seconds. "Why do you walk so fast?"
"Why not?"
Die stopped. "Good answer." He quickly started up again, jogging
slightly to catch up for a second time. "So, Kaoru," he enunciated
the boys name heavily in a way that annoyed Kaoru, "Why'd you poke me
in class? Oh, and how old are you? You live here all your life? Any
hot girls go to this school? You single? Play any sports?"
Kaoru prayed for the doors of the building to be closer so he could
escape but even after exiting he was followed still. "I poked you
because otherwise you would have been in trouble, that's teacher's a
bitch. I'm 17, I've lived here all my life, yes there are hot girls,
but it depends on your type, yes I'm single, and no I don't play
sports." His answer spilled as easily from his lips as the questions
had from Die's.
"Oh..." Die shrugged as he walked next to the shorter boy. He
looked down at Kaoru as they walked, noting the way he didn't fully
tuck in his shirt, how his shoe laces were tied awkwardly and lastly
the pony tale kept low on his neck that ran down into his
shirt. "Your hair, it's long in the back."
"Well, thanks for the news flash."
Die frowned, "I wasn't meaning to inform you... I was inquiring. I
was hoping you would continue from my comment to explain. Aren't you
not allowed to have long hair at this school? Is that why it's tucked
down the back of your shirt?" he questioned, poking at the hair
tie. "I bet I only noticed it because I'm taller than you. Does
anyone else know? What would happen if they faculty found out? How
long is it, anyway?"
Kaoru growled under his breath. "Why do you care?" he snapped,
glaring at Die through his corner of his eyes. He felt a small
droplet hit his forehead. "Shit..."
"Looks like it's gonna start raining pretty hard..." Die spoke
softly, looking up at the black sky. He looked back down at Kaoru who
was still glaring as the rain began to fall harder, flattening his
hair to the sides of his face. "Do you have an umbrella?"
"No, I don't." Kaoru shook his head sending water from his hair in
all directions and splashing Die in the face.
Die slowed his pace as he reached into his bag. He pulled out a
small umbrella and unfolded it. He smiled and turned his face up
expecting to be smiled back at by the other man but instead seeing
him far ahead. Lips pouted but quickly smiled again as he ran up to
Kaoru, placing the umbrella over his head.
Kaoru looked up in slight shock at the grinning face of the
umbrella holder. "Uh... Thanks." he said hesitantly, looking back at
the ground.
"It's no problem!"
They had then reached the bus stop that both were to wait. They
stood in silence, watching as the rain fell in front of them and
listening to the soft tapping of the rain above them as it hit and
dripped down the sides of the red umbrella.
"Well, this is my bus." Die stated as a bus rounded the corner of
the street that they occupied. "You taking this one?"
Kaoru shook his head.
Die frowned deeply, his forehead scrunched in thought. "Here," that
smile returned, "you take the umbrella!" he offered the handle.
"I can't take it! It's yours!" Kaoru's eyes widened and his voice
rose.
Grasping Kaoru's hand softly, Die placed the handle of the umbrella
between his fingers and wrapped them around in a firm grip before
dropping his hands to his sides. "Don't worry, you take it."
~All that summer we enjoyed it
~Wind and rain and shine
~That umbrella, we employed it
~By August, he was mine
Day after day they met at the bus stop, not always walking there
together, but ending up together none the less. From that rainy day
in May on they shared the safety from the rain beneath the red
umbrella.
~Every morning I would see him waiting at the stop
~Sometimes he'd shopped and he would show me what he bought
~Other people stared as if we were both quite insane
~Someday my name and his are going to be the same
Soon after they became good friends, although they never met at
anytime, never talked anywhere other than under the red umbrella.
They soon began to share with each other the events of their day,
telling of what they learned, what jokes were said, what grades were
earned. Kaoru learned that Die was 16. Die learned that Kaoru's hair
was to his waist. They both learned to love the rain.
~That's the way the whole thing started
~Silly but it's true
~Thinkin' of a sweet romance
~Beginning in a queue
Kaoru was beautiful in Die's eyes, from his chiseled cheek bones to
the curve of his nose and his harsh jaw. Die was something other than
beautiful to Kaoru. The way his nose rounded was cute, but the high
cheek bones seemed too etched for the rest of his face making a
strange yet strikingly handsome value to his tall figure. The red
hair also seemed to clash with the school uniform, but looked
surprisingly fitting on Die. Die thought the same about Kaoru's hair -
something that Die wished he could braid - but Kaoru felt a little
odd hearing that from Die's lips.
~Came the sun the ice was melting
~No more sheltering now
~Nice to think that that umbrella
~Led me to a vow
Soon the rainy season came to an end, as it did every year, but
this year they did not wish for it to end, did not wish the for sun
to shine down upon them. They wished only for the rain to keep them
company beneath that red umbrella.
But even as the rain came to and end there were still a few more
days left, a few more days to have a reason to be close to each
other. And in those last few days, Kaoru promised to let Die braid
his hair on the last day, leaving Die with a grinning face as he ran
from the shelter of the red umbrella through the bus door to the
shelter of a metal box.
~Every morning I would see him waiting at the stop
~Sometimes he'd shopped and he would show me what he bought
~Other people stared as if we were both quite insane
~Someday my name and his are going to be the same
The days were running out and the sun would soon shrine through the
dark clouds. Soon the red umbrella would be of no use. But until that
day they would stand, bodies close, hiding from the tears of the sky
as they spoke of the new song on the radio, and future dreams.
Conversations becoming deeper and deeper by the day, wanting to let
loose the feelings they held so secret, silent, and untold. Hoping to
let free every word before the day the sun would rise and never fall.
And every word would be kept hidden beneath the red umbrella.
~Bus stop, wet day, he's there, I say
~Please share my umbrella
~Bus stop, bus goes, he stays, love grows
~Under my umbrella
One day left, and they could feel the tension between each other as
their bodies touched from beneath the red umbrella. Die stared
intently as Kaoru spoke his words, and Kaoru did the same when it was
Die's words that filled the space beneath the red umbrella. They took
in and let out more in that last day than they had over the months
they had spent together. Each word becoming more significant and
important, like a rare jewel that could only be found under the
shelter of the red umbrella.
But words alone were not the jewels, but the moments they shared
looking into each others eyes, those short seconds where their hands
would touch when they passed the red umbrella back and forth... Those
were the jewels that would be forever preserved and kept sacred
beneath the red umbrella.
~All that summer we enjoyed it
~Wind and rain and shine
~That umbrella, we employed it
~By August, he was mine
The last day finally arrived, and it came much faster than either
could have imagined. As they stood for the last day beneath the red
umbrella, watching, remembering, loving the days they had spent
together, sheltered from the cold, protected from the rain, their
hands were held tightly, fingers intertwined with each others.
Then Kaoru smiled at Die and nodded slowly.
The smile that then formed upon Die's lips was one that would
forever be remembered as Kaoru turned and Die gently pulled the pony
tale of hair from his shirt, amazed at the sheer beauty and length.
He pulled the hair tie and put it around his wrist, running his
fingers through the silk strands before parting them into three
sections and beginning to braid. The braid got smaller and smaller
until he reached the end and tied it off. He smiled at his finished
art and Kaoru felt himself blush the color of the umbrella as Die
told him how beautiful it looked on him.
Kaoru turned back to face Die, feeling the braid swing behind him,
the red umbrella handle tight in his hands. The familiar sound of the
bus rounding the corner saddened him, and his lips fell into a soft
pout. Die's smile, however, stayed beneath the red umbrella.
"Next year the rains will return, Kaoru. And we will, again, be
together beneath the red umbrella." Leaning down, Die touched his
lips to Kaoru's forehead tenderly beneath the red umbrella.
